DESTA*NATION
Ft. Hugo Makepeace & Daniel Norland
DESTA*NATION is more than just a soundsystem; It is a vibration that “changed the cultural landscape of Oxford”. Catalyzed into being in 1994, when Hugo Makepeace moved from London (where he was mentored in soundsystem by Roots Ting, both inspired by Jah Shaka among others) and met now legendary musician/engineer/producer/community activist and true king spirit, David Norland (Restored in Power!!), brother Daniel Norland, and a host of school friends just leaving school and getting into reggae. As soon as the crates of vinyl (amassed from years of trawling record shops with RootsTing) arrived in Oxford, parties were happening, most famously on Port Meadow (Mayday and Summer Solstice) attracting people of all ages and walks of life, sometimes in their 1000’s!!!
Joined by singer/mc Slimma Levi (also restored to higher powers!) they formed a band, “MACKATING”, which went on to release 4 albums on David’s label “Shemesh”, plus numerous singles, and collaborations (including names such as Creation Stepper, Mykal Rose and Sugar Minott), as well as producing fresh dubplates for the sound! For years to come, DESTA*NATION + MACKATING brought the full roots reggae vibration to pubs, clubs and open spaces up and down the country, backing many protests and campaigns for social justice (most notably opposing the “Criminal Justice Act”, Oxford Carnival and numerous festivals. Living under one roof for much of the time, eating from one pot, eventually creating a housing co-operative that squatted big empty buildings in order to address Oxford’s housing crisis of the time, DESTA*NATION fully embrace the “One Love” concept, and still pump out the positive vibrations every Sunday night on DESTINY105.1FM (10pm til 1am).
